Note: The children of Thomas and Laura and their dates of birth were provided by Brenda Miller. The data are included here in order to show that Thomas Covell of Somerset, Niagara County, New York, is Thomas Covell, son of Seth and Lydia (Sisson) Covell. Thomas Covell is sometimes indexed as Thomas Corell in the 1830 census, but an examination of the handwriting of the census enumerator shows that it is Covell, not Corell. The age discrepancy for Lydia Maria could be due to her children not knowing their mother's age when she died: this is not unusual in genealogy. There were no birth records in New York until 1881. Lydia Maria's husband supposedly was born in 1819, and if Lydia Maria was born in 1813, she was six years older than her husband. Perhaps she was born in 1815.

Further, there is no person in the 1820 or 1840 censuses who could be the "Thomas Corell" sometimes indexed in the 1830 census of Somerset, Niagara County, New York.

ABOUT CENSUSES: Federal censuses were taken every 10 years beginning in 1790. The 1890 census was destroyed in a fire. The census data becomes available to the public 72 years after the official census date. Each census has an official date for the data regardless of when the census enumerator actually took the data. For example, if the official date is June 1, then every person who was alive on June 1 is counted, even if that person died before the census enumerator actually took the data which could be a few months later. Similarly, persons born after the official date are not counted, even if they were born before the census enumerator took the data. The age recorded is the person's age on the official census date.
